
Apple’s next chapter may hinge on artificial intelligence. AT&T CEO John Stankey recently warned that the iPhone AI future will determine whether Apple can regain the hype that once defined its product launches. Without major AI-driven breakthroughs, the iPhone could struggle to inspire the same excitement seen during past “super cycles.”
Shifting From Hardware to Software
Stankey explained that modern smartphones are no longer driven primarily by hardware upgrades. Instead, software is what keeps users engaged. In his view, the iPhone AI future will depend on Apple introducing unique, powerful tools that separate it from rivals like Google, Microsoft, and Samsung.
Apple’s Delayed AI Rollout
While competitors have aggressively launched AI-powered features, Apple has taken a slower approach. A smarter, more conversational Siri and new Visual Intelligence tools are still rolling out. Stankey cautioned that without visible leaps forward, consumers may see the iPhone 17 as only a small upgrade.

The Risk of Losing Momentum
In past years, major iPhone redesigns triggered huge sales surges. Now, Stankey doubts we’ll see the same lines of customers at Apple stores. He noted that while some buyers will find reasons to upgrade, the iPhone’s AI-driven future must deliver features that feel indispensable.

Investors are also watching closely. Apple stock has slipped 4% year to date, compared with an 11% gain for the S&P 500. Many believe Apple’s long-term success depends on whether the iPhone AI future lives up to consumer expectations.
