Jerry Greenfield Quits Ben & Jerry’s After Dispute With Unilever

After nearly five decades of shaping one of the world’s most recognizable ice cream brands, Jerry Greenfield has left Ben & Jerry’s. He cited irreconcilable differences with parent company Unilever. The decision marks the end of an era for a brand known for mixing sweet treats with bold activism.

Greenfield described the move as “one of the hardest and most painful” of his life. He said Unilever had limited the company’s freedom to speak on social and political issues — values central to Ben & Jerry’s since its founding in 1978.

Why Jerry Greenfield Quits Ben & Jerry’s

When Greenfield and co-founder Ben Cohen sold the Vermont-based company to Unilever in 2000, they expected independence to continue their activism. Over the years, that trust weakened.

In 2021, Ben & Jerry’s drew headlines by halting sales in occupied Palestinian territories. The move triggered backlash from Israel and created conflict with Unilever. More recently, the brand accused Unilever of blocking statements on climate change, abortion rights, and healthcare.

Unilever denies these claims. The company said it has tried to maintain dialogue with the founders and keep Ben & Jerry’s strong “values-based position.”

Unilever Dispute Behind Greenfield’s Exit

The clash shows the tension between corporate ownership and social mission. In 2022, Ben & Jerry’s even sued Unilever, alleging the company broke their merger agreement.

Greenfield argued that the brand’s independence had collapsed. “Standing up for justice and equality has never been more important, and yet Ben & Jerry’s has been silenced,” he said.

Ben & Jerry’s official newsroom newsroom often highlights activism on climate change, racial justice, and voting rights. Greenfield’s exit makes the future of that work uncertain.

The Legacy of Ben & Jerry’s Founders

Although Greenfield and Cohen have not held official roles for years, they stayed active as ambassadors. They promoted new flavors, supported store launches, and even trained staff. Their departure raises questions about how the brand will sustain its activist voice under Unilever.

Magnum, Unilever’s new ice cream division, thanked Greenfield for his dedication. A spokesperson called him “a champion for social causes” and praised his decades of commitment.

The move sparks a broader debate: can brands rooted in activism stay true to their values while owned by multinational corporations?
