The Los Angeles Chargers are off to their best start in over two decades, thanks to the poise and leadership of Justin Herbert. The star quarterback rallied his team late, guiding a game-tying drive and setting up a last-second field goal that sealed a 23-20 victory over the Denver Broncos at SoFi Stadium on Sunday.
With the win, the Chargers improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2002, giving new head coach Jim Harbaugh another statement victory against an AFC West rival.
Herbert’s Historic Day
Herbert was sharp under pressure, completing 28 of 47 passes for 300 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The highlight came with less than three minutes left when he connected with Keenan Allen for a 20-yard touchdown that tied the game.
On the final drive, Herbert went a perfect 4-of-4 to move the Chargers into field goal range. Cameron Dicker then nailed a 43-yard game-winner as time expired.
The performance was also historic for Herbert personally. At just 27 years old, he became the youngest NFL player to reach 2,000 career completions, surpassing Drew Bledsoe’s record. Broncos’ Short-Lived Surge
The Broncos (1-2) showed fight, briefly taking control with three quick scores spanning the second and third quarters. Rookie quarterback Bo Nix found Courtland Sutton for a 52-yard touchdown just before halftime. On the opening drive of the third quarter, J.K. Dobbins broke free for a 19-yard rushing score, and later a Wil Lutz field goal extended Denver’s lead to 17-10.
However, Denver’s momentum stalled, and their defense couldn’t contain Herbert late. Nix finished with 153 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception (ESPN NFL)
Injuries Concern Chargers
The Chargers’ victory came with setbacks. Running back Najee Harris was carted off with a left ankle injury and did not return. Offensive guard Mekhi Becton also exited in the second quarter with a concussion. Both injuries could impact Los Angeles moving forward (Chargers Official Website)
What’s Next
The Chargers will travel east to face the New York Giants next Sunday, aiming to continue their perfect start. The Broncos, meanwhile, will host the Cincinnati Bengals on September 29 in a bid to get back to .500.
