Jameson Taillon delivered a standout performance as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 during Roberto Clemente Day at PNC Park. Taillon, who started his MLB career with Pittsburgh, pitched six scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out four. This quality start improved his record to 10-6 and helped the Cubs inch closer to a postseason berth.
The Cubs (86-64) provided early run support. Michael Busch launched a 418-foot solo home run in the third inning, and Nico Hoerner scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Pete Crow-Armstrong contributed a double and a stolen base before scoring on Dansby Swanson’s RBI hit. Crow-Armstrong later added a 414-foot solo homer, extending Chicago’s lead to 4-0.
Pirates starter Braxton Ashcraft (4-3) struggled, giving up three runs in four innings. The Pirates (65-86) managed only three hits, with their best opportunity coming in the ninth when they loaded the bases. Brad Keller struck out Jared Triolo to end the game, preserving the shutout.
Both teams honored Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente. Pirates players wore No. 21, and Clemente’s number was stenciled into the right-field grass. The Cubs wore patches displaying Clemente’s iconic number, adding meaning to the night.
Taillon’s return to Pittsburgh was emotional, facing the team that drafted him in 2010. His connection to the city made the shutout victory on Clemente Day especially significant.
